Dream It. Believe It. Achieve It.
A year ago, I found myself at a turning point in life. I had left my job that I held for several years. After spending a lifetime of working for others, I felt the need to first, work on where my real worth lay aside from my titles, my family and my career and second, to find a way that I could use a passion for helping others that would be on my time and to build it on my terms—working as my own “boss” while still staying true to my calling and passions. The dream was beginning to form.
I felt a persistent call to continue to use what I had learned through a lifetime of experiences (both personal and work-related) to help others. But I knew I was internally spent and needed to take some time to search inwardly to find my worth through meditation, prayer and honest conversations with family and trusted friends. Do you know what I found? The more time I spent looking inward, the clearer the path became on how to follow my passion, which led me to form the idea of building a life and leadership coaching business.
DREAM IT: While the path seemed clear in that I felt a call to coaching, the road seemed overwhelming! I had never been self-employed, I was not “up” on trends in marketing (although I, like most, had user knowledge of social media, of course!) and I didn’t even know where to start to open a coaching business. I knew I needed to open a window and fly, but I knew no one in the coaching business, Covid-19 had closed many opportunities to network and meet people, and certainly I had no business degree to back up the financial end of my desire to open a start-up. Where to begin?
BELIEVE IT: I knew I had the passion, the drive, and the experience to help others find their joy. I also knew I had to shore up those emotions and skill sets with people who had strengths in my areas of weakness. Now, I don’t know about you, but—historically—I had never liked to show my weak sides, my vulnerabilities. I never wanted to give anyone ammunition to throw at me later! But do you know what I found in asking for help? In sharing my areas of need, I allowed others to shine and to steer me in the right direction. I was able to build up another person as I learned through them. Funny, I had always called myself a lifelong learner, but my fear of not knowing something kept me from new learning that could have helped me in building life relationships and more. Maybe it wasn’t too late for me to turn that horse around and become truly vulnerable—and in the process, help myself and others!
I read books about start-ups, I spent time in the library, I leaned on family and friends who were smarter than me in marketing and finance. I marveled as my wonderful husband served as a sounding board for ideas and devoted a morning to doing some amazing media work for me. I allowed my media savvy daughter to create advertisements and advise me on web matters. As I took tiny steps forward, I was encouraged by some wonderful people who believed in me and kept me going. Not knowing some things had led to many benefits for both myself and others. I was constantly amazed at how my first and second goal—being more aware of my inner worth and helping others in the process—were melding together to form a new thing in my life. I began to believe that the dream could be achieved.
ACHIEVE IT: Today, it is a year later, and I continue my quest to truly know why I’m planted here on Planet Earth and how I can use my past lessons to build my future. I’m truly joyful in knowing that my purpose is being fulfilled and I’m following my passion to help a growing group of others find their purpose through Life Leadership Coaching. Whether the client is a school principal, a person trying to find their next path in life through job transitions or life changes, or a busy executive looking for a sounding board as they lead in the time of a pandemic, I know I’m on the road that I’m supposed to be travelling.
I tell my story to give hope and to illuminate my journey for the benefit of some other passenger on this wild ride of life, and to say….You can do it! Give yourself over to building your inner self and learning who you really are (this is key!) then trust yourself to recognize your passion. Use your lessons learned to build your new life, job or relationship. I can honestly say I am in a happier place and more fulfilled than I’ve been in a long, long time. I can say with clarity that, while I’m not finished and haven’t accomplished my dream (there’s still a book in me!) I am on the way to achieving it. If you don’t have a trusted person to confide in about fulfilling your purpose or to help you develop a plan…well, that’s why I’m here! I’m living proof that your dreams can become a reality.
